Principals Report

Sacred Heart is certainly a place of care and compassion, and this was very evident today when I shared the news with our students that one of our Year 3s - Xavier Cluett has recently been diagnosed with T-Cell Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer.  While shocked and saddened to hear this, our beautiful students showed great care and concern for Xavier and their first questions were around what we can do to show him that we are thinking of him.  So, this afternoon in family groups, students spent time writing messages to Xavier and making him some activities to do to help him pass the time.  We keep Xavier, his parents and little brother in our thoughts and prayers as he undertakes treatment in Brisbane for the foreseeable future.  I will continue to stay in touch with the Cluett family and will keep our school community updated on Xavier's progress.

Classroom Snapshots

PREP with MISS BALL

This week in Prep, our students have been letting their creativity shine as they explore the elements of art. We’ve been making exciting cross-curricular connections with English, and Science, enriching students’ understanding through creativity. A highlight has been our focus on local wildlife, particularly animals found in and around our school. Using butterflies as inspiration, students have been learning about patterns and how they can be used in artwork. They've also started crafting their own animal models out of playdough, experimenting with different textures, colours, and patterns to represent different external features.

YEAR 1 with MISS CHARLTON

Year 1 have continued to explore the needs of living things by observing Peregrine Falcons as part of the Charles Sturt University FalconCam Project based in Orange NSW. The students have been invested in the Peregrine Falcons, Diamond and Xavier, so much that it is now a part of our daily routine to check in on them. We’ve looked at their habitat, diet and the features they have that help them hunt and survive. Peregrine Falcons are definitely our favourite animals right now!

YEAR 2 with MR SMITH

Year 2 has been busy adding a special page about Cunnamulla to Are We There Yet? After a couple drafts, they have added noun groups, sharpened their vocabulary and are finalising their good copies. In math, they’ve mastered telling the time, confidently reading quarter past, half past, quarter to, and o’clock times. Meanwhile, we’ve reached the end of our HASS unit where they’ve been exploring their place in the world and are excited to share their discoveries.

YEAR 3/4 with MISS CARTER

This week, our Year 3/4 students have been exploring addition and subtraction strategies, developing their problem-solving skills through hands-on activities. With Mrs. Haig’s support, students have worked in two groups, receiving support to strengthen their understanding. They have applied mental strategies and written methods to solve equations efficiently, building confidence along the way.

YEAR 5/6 with MISS WALKER

In class, the Year 5/6s have been working so hard and continuing to learn new skills to apply to their learning. The next few weeks are crunch-time to consolidate and assess what they have learnt this term.

Year 6 Camp Fundraising Update

It’s been another busy couple of weeks for fundraising! We had a great turnout at Saturday’s Bake Sale Fundraiser at the footy oval, and it was a huge success. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents and students who provided baked treats and helped out on the day. Your support made it a really special event!

We’re excited to announce our next event is a Disco Night on Friday evening, June 20th. Check out the flyer below for all the details.

In the lead-up to the big night, students are having a blast voting for which teacher they’d like to see get slimed. Each vote costs just $1, and the staff member with the most votes will get slimed at the disco. It’s all in good fun and for a great cause!

Coming soon: Your chance to help shape our schools

Every two years, families from our school communities share their views through the Shaping our future – Perception Survey. It’s a valuable way for us to reflect on how each of our schools are living out Toowoomba Catholic Schools shared purpose: enabling full and flourishing lives.

This year’s survey will be sent via Sentral on Monday, 21 July. Please keep an eye out for it – your feedback helps shape the future of all 32 Toowoomba Catholic schools.

We will also be asking Years 5 to 12 students from across the diocese to complete a student version of the survey during Catholic Education Week at school.

For more information please email: cunnamulla@twb.catholic.edu.au

Student Protection

At Sacred Heart the safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority. All children should grow up free of violence or exploitation and be able to learn in a safe and supported environment. Schools have a number of specific child protection reporting obligations that are detailed in our Student Protection Processes and Guidelines.

It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate.  We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs.  Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection.  Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs.  The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes.  In everything we do at Sacred Heart Primary School student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes.

If a student wants to talk to someone about harm, abuse or inappropriate behaviour toward themselves or others, they can speak to a trusted staff member or one of our School Student Protection Contacts (SSPCs). The SSPCs receive additional training and are identified in the student protection posters displayed around the school.

Summary documents have been developed for parents and caregivers about our student protection obligations and our broader strategy for maintaining safe school environments.

Further information on all of the above topics can be found on the Toowoomba Catholic Schools website at the link below:
