Principals Report

Recently we gathered some student voice around the icons for our Habits of the Heart and Mind.  Mrs Cullen put together some suggestions for pictures that we can use to help us remember the Habits and students then voted on which ones they feel best represent each one.  There were some great insights shared about what each picture should be and why, a testament to the ownership students have over the Habits of the Heart and Mind. We are very pleased with our new icons and we have also include a few words to remind us exactly what each one means.  These will be professionally printed and displayed on our front fence and around the school.   Keep an eye out for a new look on our school bus next term as well!

You may have all noticed the new green space that has popped up on our oval.  After work began with our Go For Gold project, we now have brand new turf with a pop up watering system installed.  I must admit that I was a little nervous as we experienced our first frost on the morning straight after the turf went down.  The installers assure me that the grass will grow!  Next week you will see more work starting to happen as the concrete slabs for our handball courts and skillion shed are poured. It's all starting to take shape.

Have a fantastic winter break!

Classroom Snapshots

PREP with MISS BALL

This week in English, we have been learning how to write sentences. Students listened to some of their favourite storybooks, including The Very Cranky Bear series, Edwina the Emu, and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt. After reading, they shared their thoughts and ideas about each story with their classmates. As a class, we have worked together to create simple sentences based on the books. The students then drew pictures to match their sentences, helping them connect their ideas with written language. Through these activities, they have begun building a strong foundation in early writing skills.

YEAR 1 with MISS CHARLTON

In Year 1, we have been busy finishing off our assessments for this term. As part of our integrated unit, the students have created dioramas that show how living things meet their needs in the habitats they live. We have also created a fact file about our chosen animals to go with our dioramas. We will be opening up our classroom on Thursday afternoon for parents and other students to come and have an “Afternoon at the Zoo”. This unit has certainly been a favourite! Have a safe and relaxing holiday.

YEAR 2 with MR SMITH

Over the past two weeks, Year 2 has been hard at work! We wrapped up a big stretch of assessments, including completing and typing up the final drafts of our Are We There Yet? writing pieces. In Maths, we explored the big ideas behind fractions, learning how to recognise and work with halves, quarters and eighths. Meanwhile, in HASS, we put the finishing touches on our unit about the world and our place in it, building a stronger understanding of global connections and geography.

YEAR 3/4 with MISS CARTER

As part of our HASS unit on local government, the Year 3/4 students had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Cunnamulla Council Office. We met with the mayor and gained firsthand insights into how local rules and laws are made and implemented. Students asked thoughtful questions and explored how decisions made at the council level impact our everyday lives. It was a valuable and engaging way to bring classroom learning into the real world! I hope you have a fabulous break over the holidays and feel well rested coming back into Term 3. A huge congratulations to all the 3 /4 students on their amazing efforts this term.

YEAR 5/6 with MISS WALKER

What a fantastic fortnight it’s been in Grade 5/6! Students have shown incredible grit and determination as they wrapped up their assessment tasks, applying everything we've learned this term. One of our biggest learning challenges was converting between 12- and 24-hour time and using that knowledge to calculate start, finish, and elapsed time of events. A tricky topic, but we tackled it! We also enjoyed some well-earned fun: the school disco was a huge hit, and yes... I got slimed! Thank you all for your generous donations to make that happen. We’re now just 40 pages away from finishing our class novel, and we can’t wait to see how it ends. Have a wonderful school holiday, rest up and get ready for an exciting Term 3 ahead!

Coming soon: Your chance to help shape our schools

Every two years, families from our school communities share their views through the Shaping our future – Perception Survey. It’s a valuable way for us to reflect on how each of our schools are living out Toowoomba Catholic Schools shared purpose: enabling full and flourishing lives.

This year’s survey will be sent via Sentral on Monday, 21 July. Please keep an eye out for it – your feedback helps shape the future of all 32 Toowoomba Catholic schools.

We will also be asking Years 5 to 12 students from across the diocese to complete a student version of the survey during Catholic Education Week at school.

For more information please email: cunnamulla@twb.catholic.edu.au

Student Protection

At Sacred Heart the safety and wellbeing of our students is our highest priority. All children should grow up free of violence or exploitation and be able to learn in a safe and supported environment. Schools have a number of specific child protection reporting obligations that are detailed in our Student Protection Processes and Guidelines.

It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate.  We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs.  Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection.  Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs.  The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes.  In everything we do at Sacred Heart Primary School student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes.

If a student wants to talk to someone about harm, abuse or inappropriate behaviour toward themselves or others, they can speak to a trusted staff member or one of our School Student Protection Contacts (SSPCs). The SSPCs receive additional training and are identified in the student protection posters displayed around the school.

Summary documents have been developed for parents and caregivers about our student protection obligations and our broader strategy for maintaining safe school environments.

Further information on all of the above topics can be found on the Toowoomba Catholic Schools website at the link below:
